Montana State University was founded in 1893 in the city of Bozeman and is one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in the state. It has been ranked as offering the best value among Montana’s public universities, according to a ranking published by Money magazine. The ranking notes that Montana State University is the largest university in the state and that more than 40% of its students come from outside Montana. The university was also ranked 364th out of 711 institutions in a list of the best value colleges, reflecting its commitment to providing high-quality education at affordable tuition rates without placing a heavy financial burden on students and their families. In addition, Montana State University is one of only 222 American universities—out of more than 4,600 institutions—classified as having high research activity.
