Stony Brook University

Stony Brook University, officially known as the State University of New York at Stony Brook, is part of the State University of New York (SUNY) system and is located on Long Island. The university was founded in 1957 as a college dedicated to preparing high school teachers in mathematics and science. It initially began in Oyster Bay on Long Island, on land that was once part of a former Gold Coast estate, before relocating in 1962 to its current campus near the historic village of Stony Brook. The university occupies approximately 1,039 acres in the northern part of Long Island and is situated about 60 miles east of Manhattan and 60 miles west of Montauk Point. This strategic location places it close to Atlantic Ocean beaches and vineyards in the eastern part of the island. Nearby attractions include the Heckscher Museum of American Art, the Vanderbilt Museum and Historic Site, the historic village of Port Jefferson, and the Avalon Park and Preserve.
