University of Manitoba
Winnipeg - Canada
The University of Manitoba is one of Canada’s historic public universities, having been established in 1877, and is considered the first university in Western Canada. The university enjoys an outstanding reputation as the largest research university in the region, and it is also the largest in terms of campus size and student enrollment, despite its high admission standards. The University of Manitoba is also known for being one of the most diverse universities in Western Canada in terms of student backgrounds, in addition to having the largest academic staff in the region. The university consists of three separate educational campuses within the city: the Bannatyne Campus, the Fort Garry Campus, and the William Norrie Centre. The university community includes approximately 30,000 students, with international students making up more than 16% of the total and representing 115 different countries. The university also employs more than 8,900 faculty and staff members, all of whom work in a learning-focused educational environment guided by the university’s values. Members of the university community believe in its core values, which center on academic excellence and freedom, accountability, equity and inclusion, as well as excellence, innovation, and respect. Across its campuses, the university provides comprehensive recreation services spanning more than one million square feet of buildings and spaces dedicated to fitness, sports, and leisure. In early 2015, the University of Manitoba opened the newest, largest, and most advanced fitness and recreation center in the province of Manitoba. In addition to world-class facilities, the university offers a wide range of recreational programs aimed at improving students’ health, personal development, and overall well-being, while also focusing on activities that promote positive social interaction. The University of Manitoba is located in the city of Winnipeg, the capital and largest city of the province of Manitoba, which was recognized as Canada’s Cultural Capital in 2010 due to the rich ethnic diversity it embraces. The city is considered one of the most welcoming cities for international students and is also one of the sunniest cities in Canada, although clear skies do not necessarily mean warm weather. Winnipeg is known for its vibrant artistic and cultural scene, with flourishing arts such as theater, ballet, musical concerts, and opera, making it an ideal destination for art enthusiasts. Among the most important landmarks recommended for students to visit during their studies is The Forks historic site, a distinctive shopping and entertainment area, as well as Assiniboine Park, the oldest park in Winnipeg. The city is also home to renowned museums such as the Manitoba Museum and the Canadian Museum for Human Rights. For those who enjoy beaches and water landscapes, a visit to FortWhyte Alive is a must, as it features five lakes, parks, and walking trails, and is home to a wide variety of animals and birds, in addition to an aquarium and natural exhibits. The area also offers opportunities for canoeing and kayaking.
