Located in Southampton on the southern coast of England, the Southampton University dates back to 1862. In 1902, it became a university college, and in 1952 became an independent university through royal charter. Before 1952 it was awarded the University of London academic degree and is now a member of the Russell University Group. The student population is 23,315, 6,850 of who are undergoing postgraduate studies. The university has eight faculties, each with a number of academic courses. These include the Business and Law School, Faculty of Engineering and Environment, Civil Engineering and Environment, Sound and Vibration Research Institute, Faculty of Science Health, Faculty of Humanitie s, Archeology, English, History of Modern Languages, Music College of Medicine, College of Environmental Sciences, Biological Sciences, Oceans and Earth Sciences, Faculty of Physical Sciences: Electronics and Computer Science Physics and Astronomy Optics Research Center Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences: Education of Geography and Environment, Mathematics, Psychology, and Social Sciences. The University has six educational branches - four in Southampton, one in Winchester, and one international branch in Malaysia. In addition, the university has sports facilities and dormitory rooms on a variety of other nearby sites.
